This post was inspired by a recent post on HN, Obscure islands I find interesting. This post is not as mobile-friendly as I would like, but I’m working on that.
TLDR: Try the webapp.
Bioko
Bioko’s got a fascinating history to match it’s geography. I’d love to visit.
Sungai Asahan Watershed
But we are here for watersheds. This one contains a huge caldera called Lake Toba, with it’s own island inside.
Río San Juan Watershed
The largest lake in this watershed was at one point home to freshwater bull sharks. This watershed also contains over a dozen volcanoes, some with their own lakes inside.
Behind the Scenes
I’ve been playing around with 3D visualization of maps, and I’ve got a start now on a web app to explore 3D renderings of the earth’s surface.
You can explore the world’s watersheds (or islands) and generate your own renders on the web app. Here’s the Po River Watershed.
The backend is a single Python thread running on an old Lenovo Thinkcentre in my broom closet, and I have no intention of changing that. Sorry if it goes down once in a while. Sometimes it’s networking goes down and I have to manually restart it. That’s part of the (type two) fun.
Socotra
Ok, once last island, that I only just I discovered through the comments.
